Native American Religion

Religion influenced Native Americans by giving them explanation for famine and disease and also gave them good reasons to uphold good morals. Ever since the first time man stepped on the shores of Alaska after crossing to Ice Bridge from Russia there has been some form of religion, from the more popular Christianity to the ancient mien sacrificial religion.

Native Americans were pagans so they believed in a number of gods not just one. "Northeastern tribes believed in a number of gods, called Manitos or Manitus, Including a powerful creator who had made the world and showered his spirit through nature". (Kerber). This helped them to respect nature with rituals and the way they used the animal’s body’s, from food to clothes, and native Americans also used more of the body, there for Native Americans didn’t half to kill as much animals.

Spiritual leaders were the center of the tribe and were in charge of the battles to where the tribe moved to follow the buffalo. "To become a spiritual leader, a person fasted and had visions, often through dreams, during the years he or she spent learning the customs and rituals of the tribe."(Kerber). A spiritual leader was usually an elder of the tribe because Natives Americans thought that wisdom came with age. Spiritual leaders were also the tribe’s healer because Native Americans saw sprits as a healer of all nature. "Native Americans saw the world itself as a place of worship."(Kerber)."Spirits were asked to keep the Earth fertile, so crops would grow and animals abound, and supply people with food."(Kerber).

Native American religion is very old and connected with nature. Native Americans have been around since the first time early man came across the ice bridge that occurred thousands of years ago. With them they brought early religion, since man is always changing that early religion change and diversified down and became the different tribes and villages the conquistadors came upon in the 1500s. "In the 1500's there were about 350 cultures and 200 languages in the Americas". (Kerber).

Native Americans existed in Canada, Mexico and in the United States of America. They have been broken up and pushed out of the homes land and forced on to reserves but there religion still exists threw all the moving and fighting and even enslavement. I personally respect the Native American culture for all that they have learned and the peace and respect for nature.
